1. Accessing the information on the CD

There are two ways of accessing the information on the CD.

1.1 Using the indexes

The CD opens with the picture of Trotternish. On the right are links to the indexes. For example, clicking on the 'Placenames Index' will bring you to the alphabetical list of all the placenames. Click on a letter to see a list of all the names starting with that letter. From there you can click on each placename to see further information about that place.

If you click on the 'Patronymics Index' (family tree), a page with all the townships will open and you can click on one of the townships to see all the houses. The householder listed is the householder as at the Census of 1891. Clicking on a specific house will show all the people associated with that house since that date (as far as records are available).

The 'Local History Index' operates in much the same way. A list will be presented of all the archeological or cultural collections of information.

1.2 Using the 3D map

From the opening page, with the picture of Trotternish, move the mouse over the picture and you will notice sections, or tiles, are highlighted. If you click on one of these, the 3D map of that section will open in a new window. You will see semi-transparent markers on the aerial photograph - if you position the mouse over one of these markers and wait for a second, the placename will appear. Clicking on that marker will take you to the information about that place.

1.3 Viewing the photographs

Some of the photographs clearly feature the placename in question. On other occasions, it was decided to use photographs which would give context. In these instances, if you mouseover the photo, you will be given help tips for the various locations in the photo. The photos do not link to any additional information.

2. Moving around the 3D map

Assuming that one of the 3D Map windows are open, as discussed in point 1.2 above, it is possible to zoom in closer to a point just above the land. After that you can move around freely.

2.1 Zooming in

Position the mouse on the aerial photograph and hold the left mouse button down. Move the mouse straight up whilst holding it down. The cursor will appear like this. Shortly, you will notice that you are now at a level just above the land. From this point, you can move the mouse, whilst holding it down, in any direction. When you see a marker, as before, you can click on that to get further information.

2.2 Restoring the screen

If you get lost or find that you have zoomed in too far, use the Restore button at the foot of the screen to start again.

3. Using the menus

When you have a page of information open from either Placenames, Local History or Patronymics sections, you can use the menus to access other information. That is, if you have a page open giving information about a place, say Stenscholl Island, clicking on Local History and selecting one of the options from the menu, say Brochs, will take you to a page giving information about brochs in Stenscholl. If there are no brochs in Stenscholl, you will be presented with a list of all the brochs. Similarly, if the page open is showing Dùn Flodigarry, and you select Interviews from the Local History menu, you will be taken to an interview with a person from Flodigarry. If there are no such interviews, the page opened will contain of all the interviews.

4. Searching

Clicking on Search opens another screen where you can type in a keyword. Having enter the word you want to search for, click this button . More search-specific help is given on the search page.

4.1 Character codes for accents

Searching for 'Dun' may not give all the Dùns. The character codes are as follows. To use them hold down the Alt key and type the letters from the numeric keypad.

à Alt133 è Alt138 ì Alt141 ò Alt149 ù Alt151

5. Troubleshooting

5.1 I get a screen which is mostly white when I want to view the 3D map.

Right-click on the white area and select Preferences from the menu. Click on the Renderer tab and check that there is no tick against 'Do not render textures'.

If you are using an older computer, you could try right-clicking on the white area and selecting Preferences from the menu. Click on the Renderer tab and put a tick against 'Limit texture size'.

5.2 The 3D map is too slow.

The 3D map will not display well on computers with slower than 500MHz processor. You can also adjust the speed by right-clicking on the 3D map and select Speed from the menu.

5.3 The 3D map is too fast.

Click on Local Intranet at the top and then click on the Custom Level button at the bottom. Scroll down towards the end and, under Scripting, Enable Active Scripting. Click OK.

5.7 I keep getting a yellow bar at the top of the page which says that it is restricted

Select Internet Options from the Tools menu and click on the Advanced tab. Scroll to the end and, under Security, there should be a tick against Allow Active Content from CDs. Click OK.
