| The school roll was made up of pupils from Brogaig, Sartail, Glas pheighinn, Dėg, Dunans and Flōdaigearaidh. During the 1930s, the teachers at Dėg were local ladies - Miss Gillies, the head teacher and Miss MacDonald the pupil teacher. Mac Eōghainn - Stafainn House - pupil teacher for more than 40 years. She taught in Dėg and Sgoil Raoghail. She is remembered as being an authoritarian of the old school. The day she retired was a big day. The wee doctor was the registration manager - he and Rev Angus Macdonald. When Sgoil na Dėge closed its doors for the final time in 1992, the pupils made a tribute which is recorded here. Dear friends, As you all know, Digg school will be closing soon, after almost one hundred years of existence. We would like to mark this occasion by holding an open exhibition of your memories of it sometime towards the end of June. We are asking you to lend us photographs, old books, sewing or any other items relating to the school which you think might be of interest. We'd like you to get in touch with members of your families who have moved from the immediate area of the school and pass this message to them too. Five hundred and thirty children have attended Digg school since it was opened. We have the admission register from 1923 but the one till then, with 207 names in it, is missing. Perhaps one of you can help us trace this historic book? Many of the 530 people are no longer with us be we are asking the others, young and old, to help us remind you all of your years here. We have attached our ideas of possible areas of interest. We are sure you can think of more. Phone the school (Staffin 257) any afternoon if you want more information. We will be round soon to collect anything you have - well labelled with your name and address. So act now. Have a good look through your photo cases and search your memories for the names of your old teachers and classmates. Have you any school books or jotters at home? Were your children or grandchildren at Digg school? Did you marry another Digg pupil? Did you give lodgings to any evacuees during the war? Did you learn to swim in Miss Weir's pool? We'd welcome any stories about your schooldays. You can write them down or we'll come and tape them. Were they the happiest days of your life? We will safeguard and return everything. Yours sincerely the last pupils of Digg school | |
