| In the 1990s, the Trotternish peninsula was assessed to have 1% coverage of woodland. In the final years of the twentieth century, the Stafainn Community Trust began a scheme of planting natural varieties of trees, in an effort to address the shortage of woodland. But it wasn't always so bare. They say that in the east of Trotternish nine or ten generations ago - which might equate to the year 1700, when you let the cows out in the morning, you didn't see sight of them until they arrived home to be milked at night. This was on account of how heavily wooded the district was. | |
