The last clan to hold Trotternish was Clan Donald. The 'MacDonalds of Sleat' - known in genealogy as Clann Uisdein (the children of Hugh) had their principal seat at Duntulm Castle from the years 1539? To 1715?. The fort of Duntulm was first known as Dun Dhaibhidh, after a Norse invader who claimed it. The Lord of the Isles drove out the Norse and made Duntulm theirs. Duntulm changed hands again and became the property of the Macleods. They had been our landlords here for three hundred years or so when the Kilmuir estate was purchased by Captain Fraser of Culbokie. And around 1900, the same estate became the property of the Board of Agriculture. In the year 2000, our landlords are called SERAD - but the name changes every few years.
