William Mackenzie records that prior to the Scorrybreac clearances, you were never out of sight of a house when you walked from Stafainn to Portree. We are led to believe that at one time within the coastal townships of Tobht a rom, Ermishader, Holm, Rig, Beareraig and Tobht, there were forty crofters as well as eighty cottars - plus their families. But we would have to go back to the year 1780 or so to witness that. The author of Iochdar Thròndairnis, William Mackenzie, said that when the cock crowed in Tobht, his greeting echoed all the way through Rig and Beararaig to Holm. Mackenzie says that a number of people emigrated from Cul nan cnoc via Uig about 1838, and again about 1847.
