A Boat from Achmelvich is lost on Staffin Shore

In 1998, Lachie Gillies of Stenscholl – then in his late sixties – was in Raigmore hospital having an operation on his knee. He got talking to a fellow patient from Lochinver. The Lochinver man spoke of a boat from Achmelvich having been lost with all its crew on Staffin shores.

I paid a great price for following the fishing lifestyle

On 17 November 1893, a fishing boat and all of its crew were lost at Staffin. The boat was named the Christina and it had come from Achmelvich. Four men lost their lives. According to Lachie’s blue book, there is some doubt as to where the boat went down. One story has it that it was lost at Port Earlish. Another says the boat foundered on the rocks at Valtos - Na Boghanan. The bodies were found at Port Earlais in the seaweed along with broken remains of the boat. One man was found dead in a sitting position just above the high water mark. It seems likely that he died of hypothermia.

LACHIE - DOES THE SONG NOW RENDER THIS ACCOUNT INACCURATE?
