| Stafainn people are very straight talkers. Another man walked the moors from Cùl nan cnoc to Earlais where a young woman was living. When he reached her door, he came right out with it, 'Am pos thu mi?' (will you marry me?). The story goes that she replied, 'cha phos, ach 's docha ma 's e do bhrathair a bhiodh ann, gum posainn esan.' (no, I will not marry you, but if it was your brother, perhaps I would marry him). Not one to be a bad loser, the man walked back to Cùl nan cnoc and passed on the news to his brother. Off went brother number two, across the moor to Earlais, and before the day was out the brother had a bride.
Morag: The rest of the story I heard from Dad goes: The second brother went off to war and was killed. One day, the first brother was passing the widow's house when she was hanging out the washing and he told her "Nan robh tu air mise a phòsadh, cha bhiodh tu na d' bhanntrach an diugh" (If you had married me, you wouldn't be a widow today). |
