There is an old story told about a local shop merchant from years ago. As he couldn't write, he kept a tally of his debtors by sketching down the items that they owed him for. It seems one of the customers went to sea for a lengthy period without clearing his debt before departing. On his return from sea, he visited the local shop. The shop keeper popped the question of the debt. Oh, he said, you never paid me for the frying pan. 'Frying pan?', replied the seaman; 'I never bought a frying pan from you'. After a wee while thinking about it, the seaman remembered that he did have an unpaid debt, but not for a frying pan - for a bonnet. The shopkeeper had been looking at the picture upside down. When he turned it the other way, right enough, it could well be a bonnet. |
