There is another cave on the south east of Flòdaigearaidh Island which brings to life a man called Duncan who was known to have been conscripted into the army and served in the First World War until he took it upon himself to desert - an action that would be penalised then by death. He made his way safely to Stafainn and was transported by friends to the lone spot a mile offshore. He spent the remainder of the war years in this cave, at the mercy of his one or two carers who brought him food at the dead of night. These helpers themselves took considerable risks, in travelling back and forth in bad weather, and also in aiding an army deserter. After the war was over, he made his way to the mainland. After King George V died, an amnesty was granted to deserters. Hence, Duncan of the Cave lived to see a ripe old age, having assumed a new identity in Glasgow.
