Placename

Abhainn Chill-Mhartainn

Translation

the Cillmartin River named after the Martins of Marrishader.

Description

This river is also refered to as an Abhainn mhor to distinguish it from its smaller neighbour (see above). It is one of the better salmon rivers on Skye and was also well known for its mussels which were once fished on an annual basis by 'iomhadairean', (travelling folk like the gypsies or tinkers) for their pearls. Martin Martin, in his book Western Isles of Scotland 1695, tells of a pearl found on the Kilmartin worth £20 sterling. At its source this river is known as Abhainn nan cnoc and as it passes through 'na Bailtean monaidh' as Abhainn Ghrimascaig. Most of the pools on this river are named and many of these are listed later in the document under Linne.
