Placename

Abhainn a' Lealt

Translation

the river of the half stream.

Description

(See Leth-allt). The word abhainn is an addition to this name as 'allt' describes the river and was always the word used by local people. The route of the river, above the main road, is closely followed by the tracks of the rail system that operated from Loch Cuithir to the road. This was used to transport the diatomite which was won from the base of Cuithir and created employment for local people before and after the War.
