Placename Badan Feamainn |
Translation a clump of sea-weed or tangle near Leac liath. |
Description The word 'feaman' mains tail which describes some of the sea-weeds which we see on the rocks perfectly. During the Napoleonic wars the price of kelp had soared from £2 to £20 per tonne. This was due to the supplies of alkili in the form of barilla from Spain were no longer available. Kelp production had become big business in the early years of the 19th century and during this period much of Skye's coast areas were turned into crofts. Crofters came to depend on the work even though their reward was very low. After 1815 an import tax kept the price of barilla high but once this was removed the production of kelp came to a halt. Crofters found themselves again facing hardship. |
