Placename Bealach nan Coisichean |
Translation the pass of the walkers. |
Description Used by people walking from Staffin across to Uig. Walking was the only way to get from the two communities for most people as it was quicker than taking the horse and cart route which took you to Bealach chual a' scairt. There is a story told of a man who walked from Cul-nan-cnoc to Earlish to propose to a young lady. After proposing the young man was rejected but told that if it was his brother that had proposed she might have said yes. He returned to his home on foot and told his brother the story. The brother immediately set off and on his arrival received a positive response from the girl and eventually got married. {The married brother went off to war and was killed. Some time after, the first brother passed the woman's house and she was hanging out the washing. He said to her "Nan robh tu air mise a' phòsadh, cha bhiodh tu na d' bhanntrach an diugh."} |
