Translation the pinnacle between. |
|
Description This is the second highest point, after the Storr, on the Trotternish Ridge at 611m. The name describes the pinnacle as being between the two places of Uig and Staffin. In March 1945 a plane hit the very top of the pinnacle and all on board were killed. The Flying Fortress was en-route from America to Wales via NewFoundland, Iceland and Stornoway. That day similar planes had been passing every twenty minutes with up to 100 making the flight. This particular plane was new and had never been in action. The day was misty although there was a strong wind. The Trotternish Ridge was hidden by the mist when the plane came in very low in front of Flodigarry island. People, out and about their daily duties, could see quite clearly that the plane was not going to clear the ridge. My father, Dòmhnall beag nan Cranag, was one of the first to reach the scene. He had spent the morning trapping rabbits along the foot of the ridge and became aware of the low noise of the plane and then the explosion as it hit the cliff. 'If the plane had been a few feet to either side she would have cleared the top'. Initially, the bodies were interred in Portree cemetery before being taken to their own home land. |
