the fold of the calves.

Description

This was said to a favoured place for calves to take shelter on Staffin Island. Suckler calves were usually turned out of the byre a couple of days after being born and calves that were fed milk from the bucket, as their mothers supplied the milk for the home, were often kept in a separate field from the cattle. This allowed the crofter to control the calf as it needed to return to the byre under human guidance rather than following its mother. Calves when born were often given an egg, which was crushed in their mouths, which when swallowed helped to clear the mucus in the throat. The mother cow would also be given a warm drink of water and oatmeal to help sustain her energy.
