Description

A school was located just to the south of where the Cul-nan-cnoc Post Office was located. It was here that William MacKenzie (1851 -1935) took up the post of Head-master in 1879 in time to participate in the crofters agitation that would eventually lead to the security of tenure so eagerly desired by the local crofters. It was as author of 'Skye, Iochdar Trotternish' and 'Old Skye Tales' that William is best remembered as through these books he gave an insight into the social history of the area. He retired from teaching in 1915 and his eldest daughter Abby succeeded him. This gave him the opportunity to write and collect his information up until the time of his death in 1935.
