Cairidh

Translation

the cairidh was a fish trap with a circular wall built near the shore.

Description

By retaining a high level of water, on the receding tide, it trapped fish that became stranded as the tide went out. Often a dead animal would be anchored in the cairidh to attract various fish and hold them there while the tide receded. They were banned early this century due to their effectiveness and the fact that they tended to trap young fish.
