Placename

Clach Alasdair Raoghail

Translation

the stone named after Alasdair son of Ronald.

Description

As most goods arrived by sea it was common practice for certain people to be given 'contracts' to ferry the provisions from the coaster to shore. The lack of adequate landing facilities meant that larger boats could not come along-the slip. On one occasion, Alasdair Raoghail was transferring oatmeal to the shore. His small boat was heavy with the bags and as he came close to the slip-way he hit a rock and much of his cargo ended up in the water. The bags of oatmeal were salvaged but the rock had been christened to commemorate the event.
