Clach nan Cuidigin

Translation

the rock of the cuddies.

Description

The cuddy being the young of the coal-fish that later in life is known as saithe and lythe. Cuddies were fished using a tàl which was like a very large landing net. The net, using the handle, would be laid out on the sea bed. Potato would be broken into small fragments and scattered in the water above the net attracting the fish. Once the fish were there in abundance the net would quickly be brought up and they would be caught. The breabadair (weaver) from Stenscholl was often seen fishing here as was Calum Leodhsach from Glasphein. Calum had an unusual method of killing fish which resulted in the fish being placed into the mouth, gripped, and with a twist it would be dead. This method assured that the fish died quickly and could be thrown onto the rocks behind him with the sure knowledge that it would not escape while you were busy re-casting.
