Clach nan Sgarbh

Translation

the rock of the cormorants.

Description

These birds were used to supplement the diet although the flesh was extremely oily. Treated like game-birds they were allowed to mature before cooking, and it was common practice to bury the bird underneath one of the turfs on the potato plot to speed the process and remove the fishy taste. Cormorant would not be plucked like other birds but was skinned like a rabbit. It was used for making soup especially dulce soup (cal-duilisg).
