Martin's cemetery.

Description

This cemetery was named after the first person to be buried here. He was a doctor from the family of the Martins of Marrishader. Another story for the origin of the name is that it was after St Martin who was commonly linked so such places throughout the Highlands. Martin was the great Saint who revived Christianity in France. Whichever is true, this cemetery was initially to be built in Garafad at the Carn Bàn. It was to be called Cill mo Naoimhean after an existing unmarked cemetry in Garafad. After work was started on the cemetery, the workforce would find each morning that their tools had disappeared. The tools would be found in Clachan about half a mile away. Eventually, due to superstition, the cemetery was built in the location where the tools were found each morning. It is commonly acknowledged that the citizens of Garafad had no desire for a cemetery on their door-step. This cemetery is also referred to as an Caibeal although it is likely that the proper location of an Caibeal was outside the cemetry wall.
