Description Since the Cropping Grant was stopped in the mid 70s the number of cattle in the area has declined whilst sheep numbers have increased. Nowadays payments are made on individual numbers of stock and whilst in recent years there have been efforts by both crofters and by European funding in the past there was a tendency to keep as much stock as possible to maximise subsidy payments. In these situations it is easier to keep high numbers of sheep than cattle. Skye has always produced good store cattle. However, the numbers in recent years have decreased rapidly from 9750 in 1970 to 5711 in 1986. Sheep numbers have increased from 145,916 to 169,901 in 1986. C Sheep now outnumber cattle by 30:1. |
