the iron church.

Description

Built of corrugated iron this was a United Free Church building which was built before the first world war. At this time there were four churches in Staffin and two smaller churches in Cul-nan-cnoc. The first Free Presbyterian Church was built on a different location to where the church is today, close to Duncan Lamont's croft. It was quite small and at the time of Communion they would use the United Free Church. In 1933 they built the present church and their manse was built on the site of an Eaglais Iaruinn which was demolished in 1939. The congregation of the United Free joined the church of Scotland after Rev. Ling left. The West Coast Mission built one of the churches in Cul-nan-cnoc in 1910 but after the First World War the Church of Scotland took over the building. The Free Church also built a small church in Cul-nan-cnoc with money raised by public subscription. Both the smaller halls are no longer in use with the Free Church hall being demolished and the Church of Scotland hall being sold to be converted into a tea-room.
