Placename Faing |
Translation the fank or sheep fold. |
Description This is the common term used for a variety of sheep handling pens and so these are dotted throughout the community. Usually they are made up from abandoned houses or byres where the windows, doors and roofing material have all disappeared. Usually, the timber would be removed and re-used as this was a much more valuable commodity than the stone. People would travel great distances to obtain good quality timber. DNC travelled by open boat to Kintail where he cut down trees which he brought back to Staffin. Due to how numerous these are throughout the community they have not all been given map reference numbers but they are marked 'faing' on the map. |
