Description In the 19th Century the pay for a fisherman was £7 for a season plus 1 shilling a cran. The best boats, which would be from the east coast, could catch 270 crans with the poorer boats catching up to 130. The variation was due to the size of the boat, the ability of the crew and the 'season'. A Portree merchant cured 1550 barrels in 1880 but only 850 in This was due to a severe storm that sank or damaged 1200 boats along the west coast that year. The same merchant recorded 800 boats in the harbour in 1850. In 1893 1000 boats, mainly from the east, caught £180,000 worth of herring in Loch Hourne. In 1930 70 drifters worked out of Uig. |
