Welcome to the
Staffin Trust Web Site
What is it about?
When the 1991 Census statistics showed that Staffin in north Skye was the only community on the island with a declining population, the local Community Council decided to do something about it. Staffin Community Trust was formed with the aim of working on community projects to help to stimulate economic and social activities in the community, improve services and strengthen the people's sense of place.
The Trust has undertaken a range of ambitious projects with expenditure of just over £550,000. All projects have been with historical and environmental themes, recognising the assets of the Staffin area: a strong sense of community identity (not only a high percentage of elderly people, but also more Gaelic speakers compared to other parts Skye); and a spectacular and unique natural environment which is of great attraction to geologists, naturalists, and walkers.
The Trust is a formally constituted group and the committee includes representatives from a range of local voluntary groups and organisations, such as the Community Council, Community Hall Association and Columba 1400 Leadership Centre.
The Trust also works with other groups in the community and in 2003 helped bring about an overall development plan for all organisations in the community. This is called the Staffin Framework for Action Plan.
